K-pop, K-drama, K-lit (or "K-literature" if you want to be decent), K-beauty... things that start with K are pretty popular these days[.]() But can any of them really compare with K League?
Contents:

Why watch

Here comes the marketing spiel. If you follow K League, you'll get throw-ins like THIS, headers like THIS, and epic knee-slides like THIS. Are you not entertained?
The best practical reason for following it is that you can get live football at a time of day when there's not much other football on - afternoons in East Asia, mornings in UK and Europe, and evenings or nights in the Americas. It's also a summer league, so you'll never have to go without club football from ~June-August again.
The highly scientific and not-at-all-questionable IFFHS rankings also has K League as the best league in Asia by quite some bit, and the 20th best league in the world. If the 20th best league sounds like something you might be interested in, carry on reading. If not, also carry on reading.

2020 season recap

I started writing a separate 2020 season recap, but I didn't get past a gif of Jesse Pinkman shouting "He can't keep getting away with it!", where in this case "he" is Jeonbuk and "it" is winning the league. However, I've now some time to compose myself, so here goes my mini summary.
First some "best of" videos
The reason I wanted to scream like Jesse is that Jeonbuk just weren't that good - they regularly dropped points to teams in the lower half of the table, scraped wins, and played most of the season without a competent striker. This feeling that Jeonbuk were a bit pants was verified when Jeonbuk were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage for the first time in ages. So why couldn't anyone take advantage of that?
The answer lies in Ulsan. Ulsan lost out on the 2019 league title on the tiebreaker of a single goal scored, and there was real determination to get it done in 2020. In 2020 Ulsan were great. They spent the majority of the season at the top of the table, were crowned champions of Asia in an unbeaten run, and only lost to two teams all year. Unfortunately, one of those teams was Jeonbuk, and they lost to them three times in the league. If Ulsan could have just drawn ONCE, they would have won their first league title since 2005. But they didn't. They came runner-up, trailing Jeonbuk by 3 points. To rub salt into the wound, they also lost to Jeonbuk in the FA Cup final the week after the league finished.
As for everyone else, in order of finishing:
From K League 2 Jeju bounce back after just one year, possibly thanks to promotion specialist Nam Ki-il, and Suwon FC won promotion with literally the last kick of the season to ensure we'll see a Suwon Derby again in 2021.
Also since it was the "big thing" in 2020, I'll give a small mention to coronavirus. Due to an abundance of caution, crowds were absent for most of the season, but not a single positive case among K League 1 clubs occured, which is just incredible.

The off-season

AFC Champions League

After the domestic season was finished, there was the small matter of almost an entire Champions League campaign to play in Qatar. There were 4 teams representing K League.
FC Seoul arrived at the competition with yet another caretaker manager, this time it was a scout from their backroom staff because they couldn't find anyone else with the correct coaching license that the AFC requires. They continued their domestic form and went home early, finishing 3rd in their group.
Jeonbuk also finished 3rd in their group. In their defence they did have a lot of their usual starting XI missing, but the Jeonbuk of yesteryear would have still managed. They just weren't very good in 2020.
Suwon Bluewings were perhaps the darkest horse at the tournament, and despite turning up with an all-Korean squad and without their captain, showed a will to scrap for every single ball and a self-confidence that was quite terrifying. They played in what was my personal favourite game of the tournament, a win over the then-reigning J.League champions Yokohama FM which included a lob from the halfway line. Unfortunately they had to play the majority of their next game with 10 men. They still pushed it to penalties, but didn't get lucky. If you count a loss on penalties as a draw, they still left Qatar unbeaten.
Ulsan... well they won it. Well done them. Their manager headed into the competition knowing he wouldn't have a job afterwards regardless of outcome, but they still bossed it. They lifted the trophy undefeated for only the second time in the competition's history. The first team that did it was themselves, in 2012.

Club World Cup

During Ulsan's rebuild, they had to jet off to Qatar again to fight for the title of champions of the universe. Literally half of the players who played in the Champions League final in December did not make the return trip to Qatar, either due to injury or having left the club, and the manager and 5 players were making their debut for the club. Expectations were not high, and they met those expectations by losing to Tigres and Al-Duhail. However, the trip wasn't totally pointless, as they managed to score this offside [goal that some said was Puskas-worthy]().

Transfers

The transfer window followed the familiar pattern of the previous season's best talent leaving for richer (but not necessarily better) leagues abroad, and an influx of Eastern Europeans with exotic names.
One notable pair of transfers is Seongnam's signing of forwards Park Yong-ji and Sergiu Bus. Will they be any good? Who knows. But the prospect of Park and Bus playing up front is the reddit comedian's wet dream.
Considering they came within touching distance of the league 2 seasons in a row and were just crowned champions of Asia, Ulsan are undergoing a massive rebuild. The new coach has minimal club coaching experience, and hasn't managed for over three years, but is apparently getting rid of anyone over the age of 30. Among the departures, captain Shin Jin-ho went to their East Coast Derby rivals Pohang, but the biggest shock is their striker Junior, who just had the most prolific season in K League history, being let go on a free to China.
I won't go over the other couple of hundred transfers that happened, but here's a list of all the foreigners in K League this season so that you can see if you recognise any journeymen:

Matchday 1

The season kicks off on Saturday, with reigning champions Jeonbuk hosting FC Seoul. The fixture is known as "the legendary match" (it's purely a Korean word play, it's not really that legendary), and FC Seoul haven't won this tie since 2017. FC Seoul have however had probably the most promising transfer window of anyone this winter, so putting an end to this record wouldn't be that shocking.
The times are admittedly not that convenient for UK viewers, but after the clocks change and the kick-off times shift to later in the day to avoid the daytime heat, you can still have a long lie-in and catch the whole match.
The K League 1 matchday 1 kick-off times are as follows:
Saturday 27th Feb
Sunday 28th Feb
Monday 1st Mar

How to follow

There is only one place on reddit to follow all the K League happenings - KLeague. Over the past year, we've grown by about 350 subscribers over 45% (wow!) and now have image flairs that work across old, new, and mobile reddit. It's your go-to place to ask "stupid" questions and seek terrible advice on who to "root for". If you check the subreddit wiki you'll find plenty of info on how to get into it and how to watch the action live or highlights.
There is no Supercup/Community Shield in Korea, but the first match of the season is arranged to be the previous season's League champions vs the FA Cup winners. This means it's Jeonbuk vs Suwon on Friday. The smart money will be on a Jeonbuk win, but the dollarydoos will be on Suwon. Given that nobody's played a league match since 1st December last year though, everything's a bit unpredictable.

The off-season

The main transfers that I can remember include
Ki Sung-yueng almost returned to the K League but talks broke down due to some weird contract clause that FC Seoul still had over him, leading Ki to write this very mature message on his instagram and head off to Spain:
Hurt me with a lie and I can hurt you with the truth...stop playing with me u ain't gonna like when I play back
There were of course many many more transfers in the winter window, but none that would interest most people reading this.
What everyone should be interested in is the K League mascot "class president election", a popular vote for the K League's favourite mascot. It was a two horse race between Daegu's adorable Rica the hedgehog, and the prince of darkness, Suwon Bluewing's Aguileon. Actually I'm not sure which one the prince of darkness is. To my dismay, Aguileon managed to take 1st place, leading Rica by over 1,000 votes. Although he only came 7th, I also want to give special mention to Jeju United's orange.
There were big changes in the lower leagues, as three divisions were merged into two, sorting out the confusing naming schemes, and removing barriers to promotion and relegation throughout the pyramid. The two new divisions are semi-pro, called K3 League and K4 League, sitting below the professional K League 2, and above the amateur K5 league. The long-standing target of having pro/rel with K League 2 "within 5 years" now actually looks possible.

How do I watch it?

Watching live
Watching K League outside of Korea used to be tricky and in Western markets the rights were typically hoovered up by sites like Bet365.
Interest abroad for K League rights are heightened now, so this year there are at least some countries that have been confirmed to broadcast K League, mainly in Asia and Eastern Europe. There are rumours of France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and USA (ESPN?) being interested in the rights, but nothing confirmed yet.
If you don't live in a country that has broadcasting rights, there is still a way to watch online from a proper source. If you can get yourself a Korean IP address, i.e. using a VPN, it's very easy to watch many of the matches in a (mostly?) legal way. If you're using a browser simply head to the Korean web portal Naver (https://sports.naver.com/kfootball/index.nhn), and when there's a match on, it will appear at the top of the webpage, usually with some indication that live video is available. Click on it and start watching. (Note that I haven't checked if it's this straightforward on desktop; I don't own a computer. There's a chance you might be asked to install a browser add-on or something - you can ask in the comments here or on kleague if you need help). An alternative if you're on mobile is to install the "Naver TV" app and find a match in the Live tab. You can also watch back full matches that were shown on Naver if you miss it live.
I won't share less-legal ways to watch here, but if you head over to kleague and look at recent posts you might find something won't find anything so don't even think about it buddy.
One thing to consider about live matches is the time difference - in the winter months, matches kick off around 5am or 7am GMT. In the summer months, kick off is ~10am or 11am GMT. However, for the first couple of weekends the kick-off times are spread throughout the day, so you should be able to catch a game wherever you are.
Watching highlights
If an inconvenient time difference is putting you off, you can still enjoy K League even if you don't watch live. Every single match gets a high quality ~10 minute highlight video produced that is region-free on YouTube. Just imagine you're watching MOTD but without the bad punditry. The official K League channel, should be hosting these videos again this year, but I should include the disclaimer that there's a possibility that the rights to show highlights might have been sold this year, in which case you'd have to find out who has those rights in your country. Highlights are usually uploaded 30 mins – 2 hours after the end of a match, although I did read that AI in their new media centre will be producing highlights within a few minutes of the match ending...

Choosing a team

If any of you want to pick a team to support, if you give some criteria in the comments I can help by suggesting a team, but I'll leave some info here based on what I think could be some common ways to pick a team.
If looking good is your primary concern, here's an imgur album of all home and away K League kits. This album has the kits from both K League 1 & K League 2, so of you're only interested in the top flight you'll have to ignore a few. If looking good is really important to you, there's one particular corner of the internet that has already given their seal of approval to Daegu FC.
This short hype video also serves to show all club crests if you want to base a decision on that.

A Guide to Online Gambling in Latin America.

Online gambling in Latin America generates several million dollars a year and is partly due to the great development in telecommunications and the Internet that most of those countries have. Day by day, the number of Latin American people who earn money in the best online casinos in the world is increasing through the Internet, mobile phones and multiple interactive screens.
Popular casinos and online games in Colombia
Currently, Colombia has become one of the strongest markets in Latin America within the top 10 casino and gambling games such as Poker, Blackjack, Roulette and Craps. Not in vain was it the first country in the region to legalize online games, offering a solid legal framework with a great variety in terms of fun and Internet games, where the big star is undoubtedly sports betting. The wide implementation of the Internet in residences and the great advance in digital technology also collaborates a lot. Only authorized online casino rooms present the official Colombian seal and the main ones such as Spin Casino, LeoVegas and Jackpot City Casino, accept both local and foreign currencies
Popular casinos and online games in Mexico
The Mexican population is very fond of casinos and online gambling. It is a nation known for its great attraction towards soccer so sports betting has a large number of players. All activities in relation to casinos and games with bets such as Slots, Video Poker and Progressive Jackpots are regulated by law, so any Mexican citizen has the privilege to play bets with any international operator present in the country. In a simple way you can get an exclusive electronic wallet to play bets with the great advantage and ease of making withdrawals on any business day at major casinos such as Bet365, 1xBet or 888casino.
Popular casinos and online games in Uruguay
Uruguay is a country recognized for its freedom, strong democracy, and little government corruption. Its successive governments have been concerned with allowing tourists and citizens to enjoy the opportunity to win money in different casino games such as Blackjack, Roulette and Slots, offering different facilities for each occasion. Such is the trust towards this small Latin American nation, that there are more and more international online casinos and rooms where Jackpot City Uruguay, Rivalo and Betway Casino stand out, accepting Uruguayan players in addition to giving them excellent welcome promotions. Games like poker are allowed in legal casinos to such an extent that the online poker variety is perhaps the most popular and profitable of all.
Popular casinos and online games in Argentina
Online casinos have an international presence on Argentine soil based on the country's legislation and constitution, each province is in charge of the regulation and permits for the different online games. Due to this reason, gambling lovers generally take a tour of different international operators when having fun and making money in games such as Blackjack, Baccarat, Texas Hold'em Poker and roulette in all its varieties. Today the busiest casino rooms: Titan Casino, Royal Vegas and 888Casino have their pages and online games adapted to be compatible with any device and have the option to play on any available mobile device.
conclusion
The industry related to gambling in casinos and online is advantageous in different Latin American countries. Even as of 2018 it has grown notably in part due to the capacity in innovation verified in recent times. Also noteworthy is the boom in sports betting that is expanding year after year with a more general public and not so stigmatized but with the common goal of achieving very good economic returns.

South Korea's 2020 K League season starts this Friday 8th May - a very mini guide

Delayed by coronavirus by 10 weeks, Asia's oldest professional league is finally here
Contents:

Why should you care?

The most obvious reason is that it's being played at all and will probably be the highest-quality football on offer in the world right now.
Longer-term, when the football calendar returns to normal, following the K League means you'll never have to go without club football from ~June-August again, as the K League plays from ~February–November. When everyone in the DD is lamenting how empty their lives are now that the EPL has finished, you can just enjoy watching the K League in full swing every weekend.
I could wax lyrical about how amazing the K League is, but really those will be the best reasons for most people. Aside from that, it does generally provide very good entertainment. Last season we saw:

The impact of coronavirus

The K League season was postponed in late February, 5 days before it was meant to kick off. Training was allowed to continue, although friendlies against other teams were banned. South Korea's response to the virus has widely been considered "very good", and so talks took place in April about resuming the season soon after friendlies were allowed again.
Clubs initially ruled out opening behind closed doors due to their reliance on gate receipts for their finances, but I guess they changed their minds on that, as there will be no crowd at the beginning with no date set for opening the doors. However, given that South Korea held a general election with their highest ever voter turnout a few weeks ago, with no apparent subsequent impact on coronavirus numbers, I'm hopeful there will be a crowd in the near future. New cases in South Korea have been about 10 per day for the past few weeks, and a majority of those have been arrivals from abroad. Social distancing is set to be relaxed from Wednesday, moving into a new phase of "everyday life quarantine", with public facilities and schools ready to reopen.
The K League 1 season is normally 38 games, but will be reduced to 27 games for this year - each of the 12 teams will play each other twice, and then after round 22 the table will "split" for the final 5 games. A league champion will only be crowned if at least 22 games are played.
If any player or coach tests positive, their team will not play for at least 2 weeks. No staff or players connected with K League clubs were reported as testing positive during the outbreak, and last week all players, coaches, and support staff in K League 1 & K League 2 were tested prior to the start of the season, all testing negative.
One interesting side-effect of the delay is that the K League will be the first to implement the new 2020-2021 IFAB rules, which bring a bit more common sense into penalising a goalkeeper for coming off their line for a penalty, and only penalise an accidental handball from the attacker if it happens immediately before a goal.

How do I get into it?

You could just start watching, but you might want to know a bit more about what you're watching. There are only a handful of English-language websites that cover the K League. Probably the most comprehensive overview can be found on this webpage, which basically serves as an index for a lot more content, but you can pick and choose what you want to read. If you want something a bit more digestable, I've been making OC on reddit over the past year, and if you read some of it, you'd be as well-informed as most who watch it:
Guide to 2019 K League - perhaps a bit wordy, but could be worth a skim - not much changes in the space of a year anyway.
Korean derbies - soccer really loves a derby. Here I tried to cover the main ones within the top flight with a bit of history, some stories, and significant matches.
Season in review: 2019 K League - my recap of the season past. It was actually pretty exciting, with the title race going to the final day and decided on a single goal scored.
I've also made this map so that you can get an idea of where each club is geographically. Stadium pictures are included.

Matchday 1

There is no Supercup/Community Shield in Korea, but the first match of the season is arranged to be the previous season's League champions vs the FA Cup winners. This means it's Jeonbuk vs Suwon on Friday. The smart money will be on a Jeonbuk win, but the dollarydoos will be on Suwon. Given that nobody's played a league match since 1st December last year though, everything's a bit unpredictable.
The K League 1 matchday 1 kick-off times are as follows:
Friday 8th May 19:00 local time (10:00 GMT) Jeonbuk vs Suwon
Saturday 9th May 14:00 local time (05:00 GMT) Ulsan vs Sangju Sangmu
16:30 local time (07:30 GMT) Incheon vs Daegu
19:00 local time (10:00 GMT) Gwangju vs Seongnam
Sunday 10th May 14:00 local time (05:00 GMT) Pohang vs Busan
16:30 local time (07:30 GMT) Gangwon vs FC Seoul

You could just start watching, but you might want to know a bit more about what you're watching. There are only a handful of English-language websites that cover the K League. Probably the most comprehensive overview can be found on this webpage, which basically serves as an index for a lot more content, but you can pick and choose what you want to read. If you want something a bit more digestable, I've been making OC on reddit over the past year, and if you read some of it, you'd be as well-informed as most who watch it:
Guide to 2019 K League - perhaps a bit wordy, but could be worth a skim - not much changes in the space of a year anyway.
Korean derbies - reddit really loves a derby.

The off-season

The main transfers that I can remember include
Ki Sung-yueng almost returned to the K League but talks broke down due to some weird contract clause that FC Seoul still had over him, leading Ki to write this very mature message on his instagram and head off to Spain:
Hurt me with a lie and I can hurt you with the truth...stop playing with me u ain't gonna like when I play back
There were of course many many more transfers in the winter window, but many were not that interesting.

There's a chance you might be asked to install a browser add-on or something - you can ask in the comments here or on the sub if you need help). An alternative if you're on mobile is to install the "Naver TV" app and find a match in the Live tab. You can also watch back full matches that were shown on Naver if you miss it live.
In less-legal ways to watch, if you look at old posts on the sub you might find something.

If you want to support your countrymen, here's a list of all foreigners playing in K League 1. There's no 🇺🇸Americans this year (Mix Diskerud was on loan at Ulsan last year, but he's returned to Man City), but Johnsen who plays for Ulsan was born and grew up in the US. 🇵🇹Portuguese Jose Morais is manager of Jeonbuk, formerly assistant manager to Mourinho.

K League broadcasting details

Hope you all enjoyed the opener yesterday!
Trying to list all sources here, please contribute in the comments if there's more details to add.
First match was broadcast 🌍 worldwide K League's official YouTube and Twitter (@KLeague), but I think that was a one-off
🇬🇧 - BBC also streamed the first match, but again there is no confirmation yet of further matches being shown
🇺🇸/🇬🇧/🇨🇦/Others - Copa90 is streaming a match per week on their YouTube, confirmed to be available in the UK, US, Canada and "other selected territories" although I can't find a schedule
🇦🇺 - Optus Sport have picked it up in Australia and look like they will be showing 2 games each weekend
🇩🇪/🇦🇹/🇨🇭 - sportdigital getting it in Germany and German-speaking regions. "Laola.tv" also in Austria.
🇭🇷/🇷🇸/🇲🇪/🇸🇮/🇧🇦/🇽🇰/🇲🇰 - Arena Sport TV in the Balkans
🇲🇾 - Stadium Astro in Malaysia (and possibly Brunei)
Others in China, India, Macau, and Hong Kong (difficult for me to find exact details)
🇬🇧 - Bet365 has hoovered up rights again, but you need to to deposit minimum £5 and hold a balance of £1. The £5 can be withdrawn later assuming you don't lose it.
VPN options are basically Naver (https://m.sports.naver.com/kfootball/index.nhn) or Daum (https://sports.media.daum.net/sports/socce). Or the Naver TV app. Or VPN-ing to a country that is showing it, like for Copa90 above.
I've heard that JTBC in Korea doesn't region-lock their streams (can't confirm it myself) so if they have the match you might be able to watch it that way (http://jtbcgolfnsports.joins.com/onair).
IB Sports and Sky Sports Korea are the other broadcasters getting it in Korea, but I haven't checked if they have streams in their websites.
I saw kleague.com mentioned yesterday, don't know if they actually host any matches there.
For help on using a VPN on desktop see this recent post - https://www.reddit.com/KLeague/comments/gg8yj3/how_to_watch_k_league_with_vpn/
Using a VPN on mobile is more straightforward as you don't need to install additional software, you can just watch it in a browser or use the Naver TV app.
If there are no legal options, you can still go illegal. Possible that there might be streams on YouTube, you'd need to search. Others I've seen mentioned include spotv365.com, cool-365.com, and aqstream.com, try them at your own peril.

Bet365 won’t let me withdraw?

I recently wired bet365 $17,000 to bet NFL futures. However they locked my account right away and asked me to verify my funds. I’ve sent passports, bank statements, utility bills, my license, and everything they requested. They keep asking me where I got the money and I told them I won at a casino. The deposit was made to my bank who had no problem with it, and the wire was processed. Now they are asking for proof I won it at the casino but I don’t have any. I’ve never heard of this sportsbook giving problems. None of my documents are invalid and I haven’t even placed one bet.
Any ideas on what I can do? It’s been over a month of correspondence and I’ve sent them over 10 attachments.

Today is the day

My gambling started out when I was around 15-16. I took advantage of the CSGO skins scene where it was so easy to get on certain sites and gamble skins (worth money) on roulette, coinflips, jackpots etc. I once racked up over 1k on my mums credit card because i was a dumbshit and so young, I didn't even know what i was doing. After I lied my way out of it and blamed it on "G2A scamming us", my problem pretty much vanished for a year or two and I basically forgot about gambling. Come my 18th birthday, I'm legally allowed to sign up for my countries local bookmaker, (eg Bet365, etc). I loved, it, and I would be on it all the time. I would literally wait for my gf to fall asleep so i could just gamble for a couple hours before going to sleep myself. I knew i had a problem but never did anything about it. I tried to put in restrictions on myself after I lost substantial amounts, (a couple hundred dollars in a day), like self exclusion for a month or whatever, but I'd be counting down the days, and let loose once it ended. I've now recently gotten back into the CSGO betting websites as they have become a thing again, and I won really big in the space of a month, making about $1,000. In literally 2 days I blew all my profit and withdrew the rest to my bank, and downloaded BetBlocker to stop myself. Today, my week exclusion ran out and, you guessed it, i blew another 400$. In like fucking 20 mins. I realise now that im so young (still 18) and if i dont do anything about this now It's going to get so much worse. Any thoughts/comments/recommendations would be really appreciated. No one knows about my problem. Today is the day i stop. Ill let you know how i get on.

Singapore's gambling laws are scummy.

They're downright triggering.
Basically, it is only legal to bet through Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club, any other means of gambling is considered illegal, the argument being that it is for the sake of the citizens to curb gambling addictions that can lead to excessive financial loss and one's downfall.
Except all legal means of gambling are heavily skewed against you. Betting legally makes you several times more likely to lose money. To give a brief example, odds provided for soccer games are much poorer compared to online bookies. Bet365 for sample, might give you odds of 2.5 when you win but Singapore Pools would offer you a paltry value of 1.7. $250 in winnings become $170. That is a massive difference. The reason for this is that the profit margin for our dear government is much higher. They need not provide competitive odds because they simply ban the usage of any competitors allowing them a monopoly on the country.
Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if sports betting or lottery was flat out banned in the country. What bothers me is that there is this pretext of doing it for the public's sake when it's about earning $$$.

How much money media companies can make by referring gamblers to sports-betting platforms

How much money media companies can make by referring gamblers to sports-betting platforms
  • Digital media companies like Barstool Sports and Bleacher Report are making plays to become the US' gateway to gamblers, and affiliate fees could become a lucrative new revenue stream for them.
  • Charles Gillespie, the CEO of Gambling.com Group, an affiliate that publishes online gambling comparison sites, broke down for Business Insider how affiliates make money from sports betting.
  • There are three main models, including a cost-per-action model that can generate $100 to $500 from each depositing sports bettor delivered, a revenue share model, and a hybrid of the two.
  • Newer sports betting operators that aren't as well known in the US are relying most on affiliates today, though companies like FanDuel and DraftKings also use them, Gillespie said.
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.
asktechman
In 2006, when North Carolina native Charles Gillespie wanted to start an affiliate business for online gambling, which would become Gambling.com Group, he moved from the US to China, and later to Europe to be closer to its large, regulated gambling market.
But with more US states legalizing sports betting — following a May 2018 Supreme Court ruling — Gillespie has brought the business to his home turf, where it acquired sites like Bookies.com and Bookmakers.com early last year.
Affiliates get commissions for sending customers to other businesses. Gambling.com Group, for instance, publishes comparison sites for online gambling services, including sportsbooks, to drive potential players to those platforms. The company's sites are loaded with links that users can click through to sign up and place bets online.
Other kinds of businesses, like tech review sites, also generate affiliate revenue when users click through their links and buy the gadgets or other electronics that they've reviewed.
With sports betting expanding in the US, digital media companies that are popular with sports bettors, like Barstool Sports and Bleacher Report, are interested in getting a piece of the affiliate action, too.
Companies that run affiliate sites, like Gambling.com Group and Catena Media, are among the handful of business categories that investors say are are already making money from the rise of legal sports betting in the US, Business Insider previously reported.
Gillespie broke down for Business Insider how affiliates make money from sports betting, and where the biggest opportunities — and challenges — are in the US market.
Affiliates can make $100 to $500 for each depositing sports bettor they deliver
Gillespie said there are three main models for affiliate deals:
  • Cost per action (CPA): Sports betting operators pay a fixed fee for every customer that's delivered to them via an affiliate link, but only after the player takes an action like registering with the sportsbook, making a deposit, or making their first wager.
  • Fees can range from $100 to $500, depending on the market, sport, and type of player.
  • Rates for online bingo players can go as low as $50 and fees for blackjack and other online casino players can go as high as $1,000.
  • Revenue share: Operators pay a percentage of the net gaming revenues, or the wagers remaining after winnings are paid out, generated from each player delivered. If a gambler plays once, wins big, and the sportsbook loses money, the affiliate could get nothing. But sportsbooks that get players to come back can generate big returns for affiliates.
  • Major affiliates like Gambling.com can get as much as 40% to 50% of the net gaming revenues over the lifetime of the customers they deliver, usually after costs like gaming duties, platform fees, or player bonuses are deducted.
  • Hybrid CPA-revenue share: Operators pay a smaller flat fee for each customer delivered, and a lesser share of the net revenues generated from those gamblers, in the ballpark of 20% to 30%.
  • This model is more common in Europe than in the US.
While sports betting, particularly in the US, is a big focus for Gambling.com Group, Gillespie said 50% of the company's business comes from online casinos, where people play games like blackjack, slots, and roulette.
Gambling.com Group reported in November 13.8 million euros in revenue for the first nine months of 2019, up 22% of the year before. It posted profit of 1.1 million euros for the period, down 80% from a last year, after doubling the size of its workforce to 120 staffers and expanding its footprint in the US, among other places.
In the established UK gambling market, sports betting operators may get as much as 30% of their players from affiliates
Newcomers in the US market — like international operators PointsBet, William Hill US, and Bet365 — are relying most on affiliates to acquire new players, Gillispie said.
"Those that don't have huge, well-known brand names in the US, they would be looking to prioritize the affiliate channel most," Gillispie said, adding that Gambling.com Group works with most legal US sportsbook operators. "FanDuel and DraftKings, they've spent hundreds of millions on US TV, people have heard of them because of that media spend."
In the UK, which has a more established sports betting market than the US, sports betting operators may get 20% to 30% of their players from affiliates, Gillespie estimated. It's a smaller share than many online casinos get from affiliates.
"Sports bettors tend to be more loyal," Gillispe said. "The casino players are more promiscuous. They sign up for a new casino. They play. They get a bonus. They lose their money. They come back a week or two later to a site like Gambling.com and they want a different experience."
Gillespie said Gambling.com Group delivers 5,000 to 10,000 new depositing customers per month globally, across all types of online gaming.
Media companies like Barstool Sports and Bleacher Report are interested in affiliate revenue
Gambling.com Group, which raised $15.5 million from New Jersey private equity firm Edison Partners this year in part to expand in the US, is bracing itself for a wave of new affiliates in the country.
Sports betting is now legal in 19 US states and Washington, D.C., but more are moving toward legalization.
Execs from media companies like Barstool Sports and Bleacher Report, which also make money from sports betting through selling ads in content made for gamblers, told Business Insider this year that they're interested in exploring affiliate models, as well.
Gillespie thinks those companies can build decent businesses from affiliate fees. But he doesn't expect them to overtake pure-play affiliates.
"Bleacher and Barstool will be successful affiliates on their own; those guys do understand digital media," Gillespie said. "But at the end of the day [the affiliate business is] heavy duty digital marketing. It's understanding customer lifetime values. It's understanding customer acquisition costs."
Gillespie expects more media companies to tap into affiliate revenue by working with gaming companies, the way Fox Sports partnered with The Stars Group on Fox Bet. Fox Sports gets certain affiliate fees as part of the broader deal.
"I expect that to be a pretty solid success," Gillespie said. "There's a lot of different ways to make money in this industry. It's not all performance marketing."

FAO Devs: Concerns about FUNFAIR

I've been provided the following summary by a guy who is contemplating investing in FF. He has a lot of experience in the area, and his thoughts raise a few questions which I'd like to see addressed by the FunFair development team, so if you guys are around, would be good to get your take on the following (apologies for formatting, paragraphs not showing up for some reason):
"Funfair at that price is still a good buy. Look people love gambling online, the concept is fantastic and ultimately could be a huge winner but I have some concerns.
The people running it are still a limited corporation right with the ultimate aim being to make money, they don't pretend otherwise and thats to their credit.
The potential risks are, in this order, user experience and adoption. You can't get supreme user experience without adoption and ultimately historical user data and you can't get adoption without ongoing usage.
I'll list what I feel their - huge - challenges are:
There are some serious players in the online gambling space that offer b2b platforms. Playtech essentially provides the software for all the casino, bingo, slots and poker platforms of the likes of Paddy Power, William, Coral, Mansion, Bet365, Gala, 888, Titan, Ladbroke, Betfred and a shit ton of others.
Microgaming would be their closest competitors - they have Unibet, Nordicbet, BetVictor and a ton of others.
There are others that have been before, and been very good but closed down due to being unable to keep market share of were simply bought out. It's an incredibly competitive space.
Playtech and Microgaming develop and maintain solutions that are then licensed to their clients on multi year, multi million dollar contracts. That's the space Funfair wants to operate in. They will not offer live services, their business model is to license their platform to others.
The question here is, who do they license to? All the big players are already tied up with the two noted service providers above - or run their own proprietary software like Stars/Tilt/Party.
The noted above essentially rules out the top 15 online gambling operators that account for well over 95% of the market. The others feed on their scraps, and ultimately profit out of regulation dodging.
I worked in online gaming for many years, in marketing then development then operations and localisation and back to marketing. I started in 2002 and spent a lot of time going back and forth to Costa Rica and other mental locations working with the likes of Titan, CD, Bodog, Absolute, UB and Microgaming before moving to Full Tilt full time in LA, Vancouver and Dublin from 2005 to 2011.
I seen online gambling come out of nowhere in a completely unregulated space and explode, I was there when compliance and regulatory bodies were Indian reservations in Canada and also saw and lived through the real regulation slowly creep in and one swoop wipe 40%+ value off companies overnight or even cripple companies along the way, all for the good of the Vegas casinos btw, absolute scumbags.
The one thing that I had a lot of insight to was user numbers, user experience and player behaviour and retention across a very very large period of time so the sample data is huge. Full Tilt and Stars were trading blows in late 08 to late 09 in what was an insane period of traffic potentially hitting 125,000 users online at any given time on both networks, that was just poker.
On casino, slots and bingo, the peak network numbers were approximately 60,000 at any given time on the big sites. But that wasn't consistent wagering. I believe it's dropped significantly since I vacated the industry. Skinned sites could make their owners a comfortable living on <1000 users, again though a lot of skins still get their licensing certification from fake regulatory bodies in Kahnawake, or Panama.
The "legit" businesses are all regulated by either Isle Of Man, UK, Malta or Alderney gaming commissions.
If they're a multi country facing operation, and are not regulated by one of the above - chances are they're operating illegally with no proof of customer funds being held in escrow.
There are of course country specific regulations such as in France and Italy where you can only operate online gambling legally by offering it as a separate player pool as your main offering so that only players in that geographical location can play on the country specific platform, no one from the outside can play in it and no one in the country can play on non country specific networks. They audit the software, as much as they're allowed to, and sign off on changes before it goes live. That regulation model is spreading at a huge rate.
The regulation is crazy. I worked a lot on the license applications at Tilt in France and Italy and it was absolutely insane the hoops that had to be jumped through just to get a sub par product on the market.
The reason I bring up regulation in so much depth is because all the b2b suppliers specified above will not offer the software to anyone without the correct licensing in place, and that needs to be provided in advance pre any agreement being signed. So all the "big boys" have licenses to operate in all their jurisdictions legally.
What happens then is because the b2b suppliers have the comfort that these operators have invested all the time, money and effort into obtaining legal licensing on all these markets, they know they're serious and have subsequently got them tied up to long term deals which makes them ultimately unavailable for the likes of funfair to market to.
Don't forget it's not also just about the technology, it has to be a great visual user experience.
That's a big problem because it only leaves rogue or lightly regulated operators as the people funfair could realistically license to, which is never going to encourage widespread adoption.
Its with that in mind that I feel the only potential for the funfair technology to really take off as a main player is to be absorbed by Playtech or Microgaming (or Stars) to introduce the technology into their own offerings OR they come out with a serious marketing budget and play the " how do you know you're not being cheated" card and create such a worldwide buzz in the industry with technology of total transparency that they create a 2.0 bubble, but in my conversations with them directly and with the research I've done, they're holding back on complete transparency - at least for now.
It's interesting for sure, I'll invest in the upcoming - primarily because I do believe in Ethereum significantly as a framework, but not sure for how much."
